Overview
Users feel increasingly uncomfortable being authentic on IG, themes and custom layouts can help lower the pressure and provide new ways to create. Instagram as a social app is meant to express personality. This leads to Impressions, which give incentive to create new connections.
This project addresses the modern toxicity of social media of being picture perfect, limiting expressions, personality, and engagement to an unhealthy metric.
What creates the strongest impression when you look at someone else's profile?
When searching someone up, Instagram pushes posts to the forefront of your vision, they are in the center of the screen, and are the largest element. It's just much easier to access and see posts.
Oddly enough, for people you already follow, the promoted content is their stories, which show up at the top of your feed, whereas their posts have to be scrolled to find, often sandwiched between other posts.
There's a clear distinction that meeting new connections relies more heavily on posts, making it a focal point in the user experience if we want to facilitate more connections, and therefore engagement.
What do you put the most effort into when creating your own profile?
Despite having the ability to remove and edit any one of them: bio, stories, and posts, posts still stand out as an outlier.
Posts are intended to remain pinned on your page, and it's the first thing users see when visiting your profile. Posts, unlike stories, aren't removed after a day automatically. The pressure of this being something people will see once, and can be seen again, doubles up on the pressure that a story would have. Naturally, something that might be seen more, will come with its fair share of anxiety.
It's important to encourage our users to not feel this anxiousness, but also deliver on Instagram's most noted feature.
Custom Photo Layouts: More than just pinned posts, this gives users more control on which of their photos they want to take the spotlight.
Profile Themes: Users have a different way to express themselves and their creativity than just photos.
